What HIFU actually does

HIFU, high intensity focused ultrasound, is a non surgical treatment designed to target deeper layers beneath the skin using focused ultrasound energy.

It can be used where skin laxity, loss of firmness and facial definition are concerns, supporting a gradual tightening effect without surgery.

Because the changes develop over time, HIFU is particularly suited to patients looking for a non surgical approach to improving firmness and contour rather than an immediate or artificial looking change.

Setting the expectation properly

The gradual pace is the point, not a limitation. People who want a visible difference by the weekend are usually happier with something else, and we would rather say that at the consultation than after you have paid.

What HIFU is good at is firmness and contour, in a face that still reads as yours. If that is what you are after, it is one of the more useful things we do.

Where this sits in your plan, whether it is used on its own or alongside something else, and how many sessions we recommend, all follow from the assessment rather than from a package chosen in advance.

Why the assessment comes first

Nothing at The Hampton Clinic begins with a treatment. It begins with a consultation and an assessment, because the same concern can have different causes in two different people and the right answer is not always the treatment someone walked in asking about.

If we do not believe this is appropriate for you, or likely to benefit you, we will say so and recommend what we think would serve you better.

What the evidence says

We would rather point you at the literature than at our own marketing. This is what independent sources say about HIFU, not what we are claiming for you.

A 2025 systematic review in Aesthetic Surgery Journal describes HIFU as a non invasive technology for skin tightening and facial rejuvenation that creates thermal zones at depths of 1.5 to 4.5mm, stimulating collagen and elastin remodelling without damaging the tissue in between. It reports skin laxity improvement of 18 to 30 per cent, results becoming visible within around three months and lasting up to a year, and adverse events in fewer than 5 per cent of patients. The authors note that more research is needed on long term efficacy.

Suitability

Honest about who
it is for.

It may suit you if

  • Skin laxity, a loss of firmness or a softening of facial definition is the concern
  • You want a non surgical route to firmness rather than surgery
  • You are happy for the change to develop over time rather than immediately
  • You want to still look like yourself afterwards

It is not the answer if

  • You want a visible change within days
  • Your main concern is surface texture, pigmentation or scarring rather than firmness
  • You have not had your skin assessed yet
  • Assessment suggests another approach would serve you better

How it runs

Understand the concern
first, then recommend
the treatment.

  1. 01

    Conversation

You tell us what is bothering you. Most people describe a concern rather than request a procedure, and that is the more useful way round.

  2. 02

    Skin assessment

We assess your skin and take account of previous treatments, relevant history and what you would like to achieve.

  3. 03

    Options explained

Your practitioner explains what is available, what each treatment can realistically address, and what the journey looks like.

  4. 04

    Your plan

HIFU on its own, or alongside something else, depending on what the assessment found. Sometimes the right answer is a different treatment entirely.

  5. 05

    Reviewed

Because the change develops over time, progress is reviewed rather than judged on the day, and the plan adjusted where appropriate.

Questions

Before
you book.

What is HIFU skin tightening?

HIFU, high intensity focused ultrasound, is a non surgical treatment that targets deeper layers beneath the skin using focused ultrasound energy. It is used where skin laxity, loss of firmness and facial definition are concerns, supporting a gradual tightening effect without surgery.

Is HIFU surgery?

No. It is non surgical. There are no incisions, and it is used by people looking for an alternative to a surgical approach to firmness and contour.

How quickly will I see a difference after HIFU?

The changes develop over time rather than appearing immediately, which is why HIFU suits people looking for a gradual improvement in firmness and contour rather than an immediate or artificial looking change. Results vary between individuals.

Do I need to know which treatment I want before booking?

No. Most people arrive describing a concern rather than requesting a procedure, and that is the more useful way round. Your consultation and skin assessment establish what is bothering you, what is realistically achievable and which treatment, or combination, is appropriate.

What if this turns out not to be suitable for me?

We will tell you, and recommend an alternative where appropriate, rather than proceeding simply because it was the treatment you originally enquired about.

How much does it cost?

Skin treatment plans are quoted after your consultation and skin assessment, because the cost depends on what is being treated and whether more than one approach is appropriate. Your full plan and its cost are set out for you before you commit to anything. The consultation itself is complimentary, secured by a £25 holding fee that is refunded when you attend.
