The clinic position

What shockwave therapy does

Shockwave therapy is particularly useful when addressing the appearance of cellulite and uneven skin texture.

One of its advantages within our approach is its versatility. Shockwave can be incorporated alongside our other body contouring technologies as part of a wider treatment programme when appropriate, which is usually how it earns its place.

Treating the appearance of cellulite

Cellulite is one of the most common reasons people come to us about their body, and one of the most commonly oversold.

We describe it as the appearance of cellulite throughout this site, deliberately. That is the honest framing for what treatment addresses, and anyone promising to remove it permanently is telling you what you want to hear.

What we will say is that shockwave is the technology we reach for most often here, that it is usually combined with radio frequency or cavitation depending on what the assessment finds, and that it develops over a course rather than in a session.

Where this sits in your plan, whether it is used on its own or alongside something else, and how many sessions we recommend, all follow from the assessment rather than from a package chosen in advance.

Where it sits in a programme

Shockwave is one of four technologies on the 3D-Lipo UltimatePro, alongside cryolipolysis, cavitation and radio frequency.

Because meaningful body contouring develops over a course of treatment, we do not position a single session as the solution. Where appropriate, measurements and photographs are taken at the start so progress is compared against a record rather than against recollection.

Programmes combine technologies according to what the assessment finds, so these are results from a programme rather than from this technology used alone. Results vary between individuals.

What the evidence says

Cellulite is the most oversold thing in this industry, so this section is deliberately conservative.

A 2015 meta analysis by Knobloch and Kraemer reviewed eleven trials covering 297 women, five of them randomised. It describes typical protocols of six to eight treatments once or twice a week, and concludes there is growing evidence that radial and focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy, and the combination of both, are able to improve the degree of cellulite. It also notes that long term follow up data beyond one year are lacking.

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery states that full resolution of cellulite is rare. We agree, which is why everything on this page refers to the appearance of cellulite rather than to removing it.

Nobody can promise you cellulite will go. What we can do is assess the area honestly and tell you what we think is achievable before you spend anything.

Suitability

Honest about who
it is for.

It may suit you if

  • The appearance of cellulite or uneven skin texture is what bothers you
  • You are open to it being combined with another technology
  • You are prepared to treat it as a course rather than a single session
  • You want an honest account of what is achievable rather than a promise

It is not the answer if

  • You want cellulite permanently removed, which is not what treatment does
  • You are looking for a treatment for obesity or an alternative to weight loss
  • You want one session to settle it
  • Assessment suggests another technology should lead your programme

How it runs

The areas first,
then the technology,
in that order.

  1. 01

    Consultation

We discuss the areas of concern, assess your suitability and establish what you would like to achieve.

  2. 02

    Baseline

Where appropriate, measurements and photographs are taken so progress can be monitored against a record.

  3. 03

    The combination

Shockwave is versatile and usually incorporated alongside another technology, chosen for what we are treating.

  4. 04

    Through the course

Meaningful change develops over a course, so your programme and progress are considered as a whole.

  5. 05

    Reviewed

Progress is reviewed throughout and the treatment adjusted where appropriate.

Questions

Before
you book.

Does shockwave therapy treat cellulite?

It is particularly useful when addressing the appearance of cellulite and uneven skin texture. We describe it as the appearance of cellulite deliberately, because that is what treatment addresses.

Can cellulite be removed permanently?

We do not describe it that way. Treatment addresses the appearance of cellulite and uneven skin texture, developing over a course rather than in a single session, and results vary between individuals.

Is this a weight loss treatment?

No. Body contouring is not intended as a treatment for obesity and it is not an alternative to weight loss. It is designed to target specific areas where additional contouring or skin improvement may be wanted.

How much does a body contouring programme cost?

Bespoke body contouring programmes start from £600. The final cost depends on the areas being treated, the technologies recommended and the number of sessions required, and a full treatment plan and price is discussed with you after your consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies from person to person. Meaningful body contouring develops over a course of treatment rather than in a single session, so your programme is planned and reviewed as a whole and the number recommended for you is set at your consultation.
